The House
Bannockburn House
Bannockburn House is one of Scotland’s most remarkable surviving 17th-century houses, rich in history, craftsmanship, and character. From its grand main hall and rare decorative interiors to its hidden stairs, service spaces, and later Victorian additions, the house reveals the lives of the many people who shaped it over centuries. Every room, corridor, and corner holds traces of its past, making Bannockburn House not simply a historic building, but a place of stories, survival, and ongoing discovery.
Built as a laird’s mansion and altered over time, it reflects centuries of architectural change, from its early formal layout and grand principal rooms to later additions and adaptations that reveal how the house continued to evolve. Its design combines status and practicality, with impressive public spaces alongside stairs, passages, and service areas that show how the house functioned as a working home.
A House Shaped By History
The story of Bannockburn House is written into its fabric. From the families who built, altered, and occupied it, to the national events that passed through its doors, the house reflects both private domestic life and wider Scottish history. Its rooms have witnessed periods of prosperity, political drama, changing fashions, decline, and now conservation and restoration, making it a building where architecture and history are inseparable.
A New Chapter
In 2017, Bannockburn House entered a new chapter when it was purchased through a community buyout, securing the future of this extraordinary historic house for public benefit. Today, its conservation and restoration has grown into one of the most ambitious community-led heritage projects in Scotland and one of the largest conservation and restoration projects of its kind in the UK. Through research, collaboration with a team of interdisciplinary professionals and experts we are embarking on a journey of long-term restoration. The community is not only saving Bannockburn House, but helping to shape a new future for it.
